The Vedas have always explored the eternal truths of this world and nature at large. The Vedas thought about the philosophical principles that are the basis of existence. These principles are straightforward, in it there are manifestations of metaphors, there is work of delicate and beautiful imagination and the emotion involved in it carries a lot of weight and depth. The concise meaning of the term "Veda" is - superior knowledge, best of thoughts, tradition, the deep meaning of all arts put together. It also means the origin of religion, law, behaviour, conduct and thought. The knowledge of Vedas is that which throws light on the good work and wrong work of the human being. In addition to this it contains knowledge about that which is beyond human perception, which is supernatural and which is God. So in the hymns it is said, Hey, human being, look at the Gods poetry which does not ever end and which does not ever reduce.

The Western scholars believe the Vedic period to be around 5000 B.C. But according to recent research that has been going on this vedic period is said to be around 10,000 B.C. Scholars like Dr. Bhandarkar, Bal Gangadhar Tilak have said that the Vedas are ancient, very old scriptures. But Sir Jaimini, Shankaracharya and Dayananda suppose the Vedas to be divine. Rigveda is the soul of sage Agni, Samveda is the soul of sage Aditya and Atharvaveda is said to be the soul of sage Angira. Rigveda is about knowledge, Yajurveda is about rituals, Samveda is about worship and Atharvaveda is about science.

Since the beginning of this universe the chanting, teaching and education of the Vedas used to be carried out only through listening. The scholars and the intelligent did not study the Vedas so deeply. So there are many misconceptions about the word "independence". Even today it is believed that the word "independent nation" was first emphasized in Rome and ancient Greece and also in India by Balgangadhar Tilak when he said that Freedom (independence) is my birthright and I shall have it!

The learning of Vedas can take away this misconceptions from one’s mind. The system of a state has been explained in detail in the Vedas. Rigveda chapter 13, hymn 80 can be called as the independence sukta. all the 96 hymns end with the word "Swarajya" which means "independence". Swami Dayananda has explained the word Swarajya used in the hymns as follows: The independent nation should progress according to the favourable position of the nation. He has also described the importance of maintaining the order of the independent nation and that the nationals should follow their duties. The word Swarajya has also been used in the Rigveda Mandal 1, Chapter 114, hymn 84, 10, 11, 12. Swami Dayananda has interpreted the meaning of "Vaswiranu Swarajyam" as the nation which is favourable to earth. The word Maurya means sunrays. In all the three hymns he has explained the meaning of Swarajya or independence. It is said to be the most superior thing. In an independent nation all are equal. Nobody is small or big infront of the Government. This concept is found in Rigveda Mandal 5, Sukta 60, hymn 5.

In this way a lot is said about independence in the Vedas. What is a nation? - This concept is also found in it and it is also explained properly in the Vedas.
