The people who day and night repeat the words of Goswami Tulsidas, and who try to state that we Hindus don’t have any duties or obligations towards the nation, who state that they are least bothered about the conditions of the nation or who the rural is should see and understand how our ancestors, the Aryans had great honour and respect for their nation and nationalism.

Our Foremost literature ‘Rigveda’ depicts the promulgation and expansion of the loyalty towards nation. We still see how Rigveda alone thinks about nation and nationalism. Rigveda is taken into account as ‘Religious volume’.

Nation – ‘Rashtra’

Atharvaveda had given a great space for nation than any other volume. But let us see what Rigveda says. The Ruchas of Rigveda say.

Oh Pusha (sun) Please make our country free of enemy !

When this Rucha was composed the whole world hardly know what is a ‘Nation’.

Rushi says,

Oh, Lord Varuna (Rain God), Please segregate truth and falsehood 10.124.5.

Oh Varuna (Rain God) be our kind of the nation. Because Varuna is equally powerful as Lord Brahma. Some times Varuna and Brahma are found in union.

Our Emperor Indra was always victorious so the Rushis have composed this prayer, it says, that Indra – Varun, Let your heaven like nation give happiness to all. Is there such a great, superior thought about the nation in any other literature of world?

Now let us see, how Rushis in Rigveda have thought about nationalism.

Nationalism

The idea of Mahatma Gandhi about self government or autonomy have their roots in Rigveda. Our sages say that we should respect the self government.

We bow to the self government who showers happiness on us.

Our ancestors were well versed with the greatness of self-government. This thought originated in India and is not imported from Europe. The autonomy dwells in our breath.

Nobody can destroy our beloved autonomy.

The devotees are worshipping the self government.

Our Sages had realised the value of self governement.

How could they harness the world if they did not know the very meaning. The history tells that the whole world was under the rule of Aryans in the ages of ‘Maha Bharata’.

We strive for autonomy. We have occupied the whole world and protected it too. They all believed that as long as Indra is our protector, till then there won’t be any calamity. They said this with a great pride. "Oh, Indra you are the protector. Nobody can humble you".

Along with the ideas of nation and nationalism, the idea of autonomy was very stronger in the minds of Aryans of East. This is explained from this hymn:

"We praise ‘Swarajya’, the independence who is enemy and killer of its rivals."

Then sages also say

It is in praise of revolutionary, swarajya – Sun

This emotion is also seen in the poem of modern (our contemporary) poet Shri Jaishankar Prasad, which says,

"We live, we take pride in, we find bliss, happiness in Independence.

We sacrifice ourselves for our beloved ‘Bharat varsha'".
